I Don’t Trust This Product1
Regarding this iPod wall charger…
— I wondered why the same product kept coming up with different prices. Maybe because they want to hide poor reviews and keep starting fresh? The first time I plugged it into my iPod, for a few minutes the backlight of the iPod turned on, but not the text. Then the light went off and I was not able to get the iPod to respond again for two hours. It was dead. I made sure the lock switch was off, I tried to reset, I plugged it in using the Apple brand charger that has been working fine…but nothing worked. It was gone.
— Perhaps it was a coincidence that, despite the iPod working fine for two years (including a couple of hours on a flight just yesterday), the first time I plugged it in to charge with this product, it died. However, it also seems possible that this product provided the wrong electrical supply to the iPod and fried it, at least temporarily. I don’t feel like trying it on other iPods to test this theory, though.
— I thought I was getting a good deal by buying this for 1 cent and paying $4.99 shipping and handling. Now I realize the ploy – there is no reason to return it for a $0.01 refund, and shipping is not refunded.
— I urge people to avoid this product.

It’s Only Half Bad3
I bought two of these. One broke within a week and one is still working fine after a year of frequent use because my son and I share it. Go figure.

Ipod wall charger3
its OK as far as chargers go. But you can’t separate the cord and plug to use it for other things.

Watch True Blood: The Complete First Season HBO Series Blu-ray Online Free

Completely addictive. Even if you don’t watch television5
Rabbit ears on pawn shop televisions are about my speed; needless to say, I don’t watch television. However, kind friends mainline this series two or three shows at a time, and they got me hooked: were I to be completely honest, I might have to admit to giving serious thought to obtaining this by less-than-legal-means. It actually might be worth jail time.

Speaking as someone who was born in America’s deep South, this series captures everything about Louisiana that is appealing. (Spanish Moss, vampires, latent racism and homophobia, the dichotomy between Christian Southern values and patriarchal, brutality-enforced poverty, sassy Southern women who know how to fight with chains, etc.)

What it makes it really stand out, though, is the casting: there isn’t a bad actor in the bunch–and they are all believable as Southern archetypes. Nelsan Ellis as the short order cook/drug dealer Lafayette and Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin as the romantic leads give mesmerizing performances.

True Blood, or possibly the original series of books from which it arose, is an arresting set of stories: Faulkner says that the only thing really worth writing about (or thinking about, by extension) is the human heart in conflict with itself. The Southern United States depicted in True Blood is conflict embodied–you are a supposed to be a good Christian, and follow the rules of an established society, but you live in the middle of a swamp so dense and wild that it believably could be home to minions of Satan, like vampires.

It’s a lot to think about. If you are one of those artistic/professional types with too much to do, don’t start watching this; it becomes an obsession.

And Now: A Short Review of the Actual DVD–this is the regular, not Blu-Ray version, as my $100.00, cigarette-burned, pawn shop t.v. doesn’t do Blu-Ray.

Price: $10.00 less than my local electronics store.

Extras: There is some very funny stuff here that was not on the original websites for the series: ads for lawyers for vampires; vampire hotels; vampire dating, all done with the appropriate levels of fake bad acting and camp.

Don’t be afraid to look at the French language ad as well. It uses all of six French words which you probably already know.

There is also a short video parody of someone like Hugh Downs doing an in-depth report on vampires. Complete with bad video backgrounds for foreign locales and hokey vampire internet conspiracies, this is a well-done, satirical background take on some of the ‘vampire movement’s more glossed-over history.

One negative: the commentary tracks play over the original episodes; it’s neat to watch for about five minutes, and then it’s a little bit like dissecting a romantic relationship–the mystery dies once the magic involved gets out into the bright light of day.

However, overall, True Blood Season One is well worth watching again–particularly in the pilot episode, the acting, and the effort the cast and crew put into characterization and detail, is even more obvious the second time around.

True Blood is Television at Its Bloody Best.5
“Thou Shall Not Crave Thy Neighbour.”

True Blood ponders the question: Why do good girls fall for bad boys? Alan Ball is perhaps best known for his originality and aesthetics in writing the Academy-Award-winning screenplay for American Beauty, and for creating the HBO television show Six Feet Under. Based on Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse series, Ball’s new HBO series, True Blood (which recently premiered on HBO on September 7, 2008), is another good reason to own a television these days. Set in Bon Temps, Louisiana, the Southern Vampire television series tells the gothic love story of Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress, who falls in love with the town vampire, Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer). Sookie is a virgin, “cursed” with the ability to hear people’s thoughts. Bill is a 173-year-old vampire who, despite his Southern charms, has only one thing on his mind when it comes to Sookie. Meanwhile, as religious leaders and government officials debate the safety issues surrounding the co-existence of vampires and humans, “Bad Things” (as the show’s theme song suggests) are happening to the residents of Bon Temps. The show’s soundtrack (by Gary Calamar) is equal parts “swampy, bluesy and spooky.” Ryan Kwanten plays Sookie’s brother, Jason Stackhouse, a sex addict who is also addicted to “V” (vampire blood) for its viagra-ecstasy-like effects. William Sanderson and Chris Bauer play the small town’s rather inept investigating law enforcement officers. Much like Six Feet Under, True Blood reveals Alan Ball’s genius for original storytelling. True Blood is not only television with fangs, it is television at its bloody best.

12/12/08 Update: True Blood received a Golden Globe nomination this week.

A fun and adventurous take on vampires and the supernatural4
I’m not sure that any good series on the supernatural has ever tried as hard to be simply good fun. It isn’t the masterpiece that BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER was, but I don’t think Alan Ball set his sights that high. While Joss Whedon strove in BUFFY to create an icon and redefine television narrative, Ball just seems to want to tell a compelling story filled with memorable moments.

TRUE BLOOD is, of course, based on the series of novels written by Arkansas writer Charlaine Harris. The series was originally known as the Southern Vampire Mysteries, but has since come to be better known as The Sookie Stackhouse novels. The premise is that a Japanese corporation has successfully created artificial blood, a product so like the real thing that vampires, previously relegated to feeding off humans in the dark, come “out of the coffin” and into society, intent on living off the new fake blood. The series’ title comes from the name of the artificial blood marketed and sold in stores. The television series wisely does not try to hew too closely to the novels, though for the most part Sookie’s story does. And the way things turn at the end of the season, it is clear that Season Two (the show was renewed very early in the season) is going to pick up with the second novel in the series, though the action most likely will be in Bon Temps and not in Dallas (the second novel is entitled LIVING DEAD IN DALLAS).

The major difference between the novels and the TV series is that while the novels focus almost entirely on Sookie, the series has elevated a number of secondary characters and padded out their story. The focus on Sookie in the books is inevitable given that she is the narrator. But since few shows attempt to tell a story primarily from one character’s point of view (an exception is Season One of VERONICA MARS, in which the title character features in very nearly every scene), elevating several characters was a necessity. Tara is a very minor character in the books (and white to boot), but on the show she is black and one of the most important characters. Sookie’s brother Jason is a moderately important character in the books, but definitely not as central as Bill, Eric, or Sam. Tara was promoted on the show partly to balance out the show in terms of race and gender. I’m not quite sure why Jason was made more important. The story arcs that are given to these characters are not always successful, but they do give the show some diversity. Lafayette, Tara’s flamboyantly gay cousin and short order cook at Merlotte’s, the tavern where Sookie is a barmaid, likewise is a major character on the TV series, but barely makes an appearance in the novels.

I’m not always comfortable with the additions the show makes to the story and they usually are the weakest part of the show. For instance, the long story of Tara’s mother and her demon possession is an addition that I feel clutters the show, even as it raises the question of why Tara herself struggles with relationships. The character of Amy, who is weirdly involved with Jason in the latter half of the season, sits on the rest of the story like a weird, disconnected appendage. In fact, the entire obsession with V (or vampire blood, which is taken like a drug) is unique to the show and not the books, I think to the show’s detriment. Terry Bellefleur is a slightly more important character in the series, and about 20-30 years younger (and played by Todd Lowe, who played Zack, Lane’s band mate/boyfriend/husband in THE GILMORE GIRLS), and a veteran of the Gulf War instead of the Vietnam War. I don’t expect for a show to be especially true to its source material. I don’t look for a scene-by-scene recreation. But I do think that the additions show actually add something of value to the story. All in all, I do not think the completely original aspects improved the overall story.

There is a lot of controversy on boards where fans of the books linger about Anna Paquin. Physically she isn’t quite like how Sookie is described in the books, where she is far curvier and extremely busty. I personally love Anna Paquin’s performance. She has a haunted, hunted look that someone who has had to struggle for years of hearing the thoughts of others might have. She does very much seem to embody “Crazy Sookie,” as she is known to everyone in Bon Temps. I also like all the actors who played the three other major characters from the books, Stephen Moyer as Bill, Alexander Skarsgaard as Eric (who will, given his stature as an actor and the precedent of the books, become a more important character in Season Two — and let me just add, could anyone have been found more perfect to play Eric?), and Sam Trammell as Sam Merlotte. My favorite performer to play a major role on the show but a minor one in the books is Nelsan Ellis, who also had a recurring role on the sadly short-lived THE INSIDE and was on an excellent episode of VERONICA MARS, and who on TRUE BLOOD plays Lafayette. Though I have to add that he is s completely unbelievable character. I’ve lived three years in a town not terribly distinct from Bon Temps and I can assert that you simply will not find many if any openly gay people and definitely not one a flamboyant one.

All in all I really enjoyed the series TRUE BLOOD, though on the one hand I prefer the books (and I strongly recommend anyone who loves TRUE BLOOD to give the books a try, though I also warn them that the show does seem to be following to a greater or lesser degree the books — Season Two is already set up to follow many of the second novel’s storylines) and on the other I prefer Alan Ball’s earlier show SIX FEET UNDER. Still, it is a good, fun show.

And can I just add that this show has my all time favorite opening credits. It is filled with one astonishing image after another, from a coiled water moccasin to a Holy Ghost inspired preacher doing a 180 jump in church to lasciviously dancing strippers, all to a wonderfully appropriate song by country performer Jace Everett entitled “Bad Things.”

Amazon.com
Alan Ball’s True Blood series works well for television, as it has enough sensationalism to tantalize and enough story girth to make the viewer care about the characters. That one can finally invest emotion into monsters, including an undead Civil War victim, a transformer who can shapeshift into various animals, and a female mind reader, speaks volumes about America’s willingness to accept fantasy. Of course, television has always produced good fantasy shows (I Dream of Genie), but True Blood’s Southern Goth brand of fun horror is more macabre and more perverse, not to mention gorier, than most shows of its kind to date. Adapted from Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels, True Blood thrills because of its equal blend in each episode of erotica, humor, tragedy, mystery, and fantasy.

Set in a rural, swampy Louisiana parrish, the show centers around Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and her clan, sweet grandmother Adele (Lois Smith) and air-headed brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten). Illicit love is spawned early on, when Sookie saves vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) from having his blood stolen in the parking lot of Merlotte’s diner, owned by Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) who completes what will form a complex love triangle. As tensions between Sookie’s suitors loosen or tighten, many side plots, such as her African American best friend Tara’s (Rutina Wesley) struggle with an alcoholic, Bible-thumping mother and her brother’s dangerous crush on drug addicted hippie, Amy Burley (Lizzy Caplan), keep one wondering who will succeed in this podunk place. The main tension throughout, however, is a race war waged between vampires and humans. As murders of “fang bangers” occur (human girls who let vampires bite them) and dumb policeman Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer) fails to find clues, one sees the metaphorical implications of vampirism and feels deeper resonance with what can be a downright trashy show. Gossip galore, especially about what kinds of babies interbreeding will produce, is rampant. One of the funniest characters is Tara’s flamboyant cousin, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis), who deals drugs, works as a fry cook, and services the local white politicians, while making sure he’s always up in everyone’s business.

What makes True Blood smarter than pure soap opera is the parallels it draws between its monster mash and actual, familiar societal problems. Sookie and her friends watch the news, where Evangelicals bash vampires and prohibit mixed marriage, and everyone is addicted to V, a.k.a vampire blood, that effects like psychedelic heroin. Even its gore reflects a mix of serious and silly, as vampires explode into red, sticky goop. Though it may not be attempting to qualify for the best vampire footage ever shot, True Blood is as addictive as that substance the town’s youth obsesses over, which is a metaphor in itself. –Trinie Dalton

Entertaining enough to hold the interest of an eight year old boy5
I was searching for a video collection for the family library that showcased our National Parks and I found this product to be the perfect choice. The product I purchased is on DVD and, as viewed on a 42″ plasma TV, I rate the production quality as top shelf. The scenery was exceptional and the commentary was quite educational. To gauge the entertainment value I can say the content was sufficient to hold the interest of my three boys, ages eight, ten and twelve.

TV in a box1
I thought the series would detail the National Parks listed. It seems like the series is a collection of past National Geographic television episodes slapped together. The “Hidden Yosemite” highlighted a climb up El Capitain-hardly a hidden feature of the park. The Hawaii episode was even lamer. I had purchased it as a gift and was very disappointed. Photography remains good.

Not very hidden message1
This set is not what you think it’s going to be. You’d think it was going to show each of the highlighted parks and show what makes each park unique; flora, fauna, natural formations, beautiful scenery. Instead this series hits relentlessly up side the head with dire predictions about global warming and the horrible consequences of civilization. Not once, but many times. In the Death Valley disc, they mention global warming 12 times in one hour.

The message even flies in the face of science. They talk about how parks have changed with it’s habitat being constantly threatened by the hand of man and state quite clearly that the natural denizens will be unable to adapt to the changes when species adaptation is a well-founded scientific principle.

So if you’re looking for wonderful travelogues showcasing our national parks, keep looking.

This was a great disappointment at many levels.

Just ok3
I ordered 3 of these, but I only have one left. Two arrived broken (obviously that way before they ever shipped) and one is ok. Amazon would not replace them because they felt that the defects were widespread in their current stock. I went to Home Depot and found a similar one for the same price that I paid on Amazon and didn’t have to pay for shipping. If you do take the risk and order this product, take a look INSIDE the liquid chambers before mounting the dispenser to the wall with silicone. I made the mistake of mounting one to the shower wall before I discovered that there was a big hole in the plastic at the bottom of the chamber that isn’t visible unless you take the lid off and peer down into it.

Repeat buyer!5
I purchased one of these units (with two dispensers) two years ago and love it. This unit (3 dispensers) is even better because of the uni-body design. The whole unit slides off of the mounting plate for refill. My other dispenser has a separate piece that slides off of the base for refill. That broke within 6 months, but the dispenser still works great. I mounted the new one in a second bathroom in minutes and was using it the following day. I love the corner adapter for storing my face wash. It looks good and is very functional. A clean look for the shower. I highly recommend this brand and this dispenser.

Pretty good dispenser4
This is a basic soap/shampoo/conditioner dispenser that works just fine. I installed it about a month ago, and I’ve had no problems with leaks so far. It looks okay; nothing fancy, but then I wanted something simple. This was the best-looking dispenser I could find.

It comes with sticky tape and silicone to mount the base to the shower wall. The sticky tape is used to hold the base in place while the silicone cures overnight. The silicone will ensure that the unit won’t fall off; I was hesitant, because silicone can never be completely removed. If this dispenser fails in the future, I must put another in the same spot.

The dispenser is easy to fill, and it dispenses a decent amount of shampoo or soap with each pump. The white base cover of the dispenser is apparently removable, as it keeps trying to detach on one side.

Would I buy it again? Probably. It was cheap enough; if I need to replace it down the road, I can just install a new one on the permanently installed mounting plate.

Bing Croons….Rosemary Swoons….Watch It In June!5
This review refers to the Widescreen Collection(Paramount)DVD edition of “White Christmas”…

This DVD should be held up as an example of what DVDs are all about. The transfer and restoration of this 50 year old film is superb. It is the reason we are willing to spend a little more to upgrade from VHS and are awed when we see the wonderful results. Filmed in “VistaVision”, the widescreen picture lets you take in every scene of this wonderful classic from edge to edge. The picture is clear, sharp and in glorious technicolor. The colors are beautiful and vibrant.
You have the choice of viewing it in DD5.1 surround or the restored Mono. For those looking for some special features, Rosemary Clooney helps out with a retrospective interview and also commentary. There are English subtitles for those needing them and may also be viewed in French(mono).

The film is a treasure in itself. Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye,Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen are the stars of this 1954 musical with songs by Irving Berlin that you’ll want to sing along with and keep humming long after the film has ended. Directed by Michael Curtiz it’s a feel good film that although takes place during the Christmas season, is one that you can pull out and watch anytime of the year.

Bing and Danny were Army buddies, now a successful song and dance team and are out to help their favorite old retired General(Dean Jagger),who is having trouble coping with retirement. The General is now running a country inn in Vermont, but the big problem is there is no snow to bring up the tourists. Bing and Danny to the rescue, as they turn the inn into a showcase of talent, and fall for the Haines sisters along the way. Can these wonderful voices also bring the snow out of the sky?…well..you know.

This film is filled with Berlin’s wonderful tunes. When Bing takes Rosemary’s little hand in his and croons “Count Your Blessings” to her..well it’s movie heaven. Rosemary also treats us to several numbers, Vera-Ellen does some fabulous hoofing, and Danny clowns and keeps us smiling like only Danny can. And how much fun is it watching Bing and Danny do the “Sisters” number together?…alot! Then there’s the goose bump evoking, wonderfully nostalgic scene of the four of them singing “White Christmas” together with the Winter Wonderland of Vermont as a backdrop.I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the wonderful character actress Mary Wicks, she’s a great busy-body who causes misunderstandings, and also keep an eye out for George Chakiris and Barrie Chase.

Thanks Paramount for bringing us this great old classic holiday film on this great DVD…enjoy…Laurie

White Christmas Has Received a Face Lift–of Sorts4
“White Christmas,” one of my favorite movies of all time, had always looked bad on home video. The VHS version was a pale, pastel shadow of the original until the 40th anniversary edition of 1994 when all Paramount did was greatly darken the picture. Unfortunately, this was also the print that was used to make the first DVD release in 2000: a dark, dark picture with no contrast, tons of grain, and a barely-in-focus picture that revealed little detail. Fortunately, most of this has been improved in the newly-released 2-disc Anniversary Edition that has just hit the stores.

Although Paramount obviously did not want to fund a complete restoration, the picture now has vibrant colors (the “Mandy” number will knock your socks off!) with much better sharpness and detail and very little grain to speak of. However the picture is still a little too dark and flat, at least one scene still has registration problems (when Bing meets Doris, the “Mutual, I’m sure” girl), some scenes could have a sharper focus, and there’s some trouble with minor flicker (stability) of the image. The bonus material is very enjoyable and above average, with family members, critics, and cultural historians to add perspective.

So in summary I definitely recommend this latest version of “White Christmas” as a rebuy on the strength of the improved picture alone, with the bonus material as a very nice plus. I would have given it my highest rating if the picture quality had presented absolute clarity and if the film itself were more inspired, but it still remains a sentimental favorite and a must-see!

It Can Be Christmas Any Time of Year4
I was stunned to find this new anniversary edition at Target this past Tuesday – stunned because it is not being released for another month. I picked it up hoping for the best. It is a 2-disc edition with all the bonus features on the second disc. I see Amazon has finally listed those features above. They are actually quite good and I learned things I had never known. But the movie presentation is a disappointment. As usual, Paramount has NOT cleaned up the film. The colors are slightly off – skin tones don’t look quite right and it sometimes looks faded, yet most of the time the colors are very bright and pop; the picture is not sharp and sometimes looks a little fuzzy; there is flickering throughout the whole film; etc. Why can’t Paramount take a cue from Warner? They take the time to put out a beautiful product. Paramount seems to just throw it out. This is the third release on DVD for “White Christmas” and considering it is the 55th Anniversary, you would think more care would have been put into making the film look spectacular. It’s 2009 so we should be seeing the best possible picture. But I guess this is the best we can expect from Paramount. I do give Paramount credit on their TV show releases as they do restore/clean them for the most part (Example: I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show, The Andy Griffith Show, etc – which are all beautiful prints). They just do nothing for the motion pictures. Oh, the audio is in 5.1 or restored mono. The 5.1 is horrible. It is fine until the singing starts. The vocals are much louder than the music and has an echo-y sound. If you own “Grease,” you’ll understand. It is unwatchable! So I switched to the restored mono and it sounds great. What a difference! I would love to watch it with stereo sound but Paramount has screwed-up yet again. I sold my copy of “Grease” because of the ruined soundtrack, but at least this one has a great mono soundtrack. But it is too bad the picture has not been improved to what it could be. I give it four stars because of all the added extras – it would be five stars if the film looked better. Is it horrible? No! It is very watchable but I was a little distracted by the unrestored print. I’m just happy to have this anniversary edition. You make the choice.

This semi-remake of Holiday Inn (the first movie in which Irving Berlin’s perennial, Oscar-winning holiday anthem was featured) doesn’t have much of a story, but what it does have is choice: Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, an all-Irving Berlin song score, classy direction by Hollywood vet Michael Curtiz (Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood), VistaVision (the very first feature ever shot in that widescreen format), and ultrafestive Technicolor! Crosby and Kaye are song-and-dance men who hook up, romantically and professionally, with a “sister” act (Clooney and Vera-Ellen) to put on a Big Show to benefit the struggling ski-resort lodge run by the beloved old retired general (Dean Jagger) of their WWII Army outfit. Crosby is cool, Clooney is warm, Kaye is goofy, and Vera-Ellen is leggy. Songs include: “Sisters” (Crosby and Kaye do their own drag version, too), “Snow,” “We’ll Follow the Old Man,” “Mandy,” “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep,” and more. Christmas would be unthinkable without White Christmas. –Jim Emerson

Ricky Gervais is brilliant in Ghost Town, playing an unnervingly rude dentist, Bertram, who dies for a few minutes during surgery and acquires the unwanted ability to see ghosts. Chased throughout Manhattan by a gaggle of restless spirits begging him to take care of their unfinished business on Earth, Bertram turns them all away except Frank (Greg Kinnear). The latter, a rogue who cheated on his archaeologist widow, Gwen (Téa Leoni), wants Bertram to intervene in a romance between Gwen and a starchy activist (Bill Campbell). Misanthropic Bertram has to polish his relationship patter, but ends up sounding a lot like Gervais’ infamous character in the original The Office, unable to complete a sentence without making others uncomfortable. In time, of course, Bertram falls for the wonderful Gwen, setting up a bunch of overlapping conflicts. Cowritten and directed by David Koepp (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), Ghost Town walks a fine line between comic freshness and a story idea with elements that have become overly familiar in movies and on television. Kinnear and Leoni have never been better on screen, but Ghost Town is well worth seeing because no one like Gervais has previously played the hapless hero in a high-concept film such as this one. With Gervais doing his familiar, hilariously discomfiting thing, it really doesn’t matter what kind of movie Ghost Town is. Happily, it’s a pretty good film in every respect. –Tom Keogh
